Applied sound analysis of bioacoustics and ecoacoustics
The course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on the methodologies commonly employed in bioacoustics and ecoacoustics research. Particular attention is dedicated to the main techniques of acoustic data analysis, following both a qualitative and a quantitative approach. Both bioacoustics and ecoacoustics operate across terrestrial and aquatic environments, and both rely on sounds as tools and subjects of eco-ethological research. Indeed, sounds as analytical tools can assess and monitor animal diversity, abundance, behaviour, distribution, and their relationship with the environment. The course provides detailed knowledge on the analytical methods employed to elaborate, investigate, and characterise acoustics signals of both human and non-human animals, of the environment in which they live, and the interrelation between them. Through the course, students will acquire and deepen their knowledge of the essential tools and programs for acoustic research.
